Frequently asked questions

How to get started?

Simply Download and install Nokl on each of your devices and log in to your account. That’s it! Your devices will now see each other’s drives and be able to remote desktop.

Once installed, take a look at the Getting Started page.

Why do I need Nokl Account?

Your devices enroll into a Nokl account, so that they can find each other. Once an encrypted peer-to-peer connection is established, devices share data with each other directly -- your data never lands on our servers. Also to make sure that only you can access your files and remote control from other computers, and not some hacker. Your email is used for OTP and for Nokl-specific notifications (like new device logins and folder shares); never for spam.

What is the underlying p2p technology in Nokl?

GSTP (GoodSyncTransferProtocal) - it is our own block-oriented file transfer protocol optimized for transfer efficiency (only changed blocks are transferred). GSTP also implements full duplex byte pipe tunnels used for RDC and VNC connection.

Is NOKL Local-Area-Network-aware? Does it prioritise LAN traffic?

Totally. Nokl uses the most direct way to connect to devices. So if they are on the same Local Area Network, NOKL would connect them on this local net.

Does Nokl create a VPN tunnel like a mesh network?

No VPN and no mesh. Nokl utilizes TCP/IP connections (which are faster than VPN and mesh).

How does Nokl protect files and what do you do to avoid data leaks?

The main way we protect your files is that we do not store them! The system is entirely peer-to-peer and zero-knowledge - your files never hit our corporate servers. That's what differentiates us from any sharing using the cloud.

All NOKL does is creates end-to-end encrypted (TLS) peer-to-peer connections between your devices, which can only be utilized via your Nokl account.

Nokl's account security includes the combination of 2FA, trusted device lists, and security notifications, for protection.

How the files are protected while at rest on your devices remains up to you.

How to achieve direct connection?

Direct connection between Nokl Client and Nokl Server equals speed, as your traffic does not have to go thru our Forwarders.

Each Nokl Server has LocalNet IP address (192.168.1.N) and Port (usually 43333) and Remote IP address and Port.

Local IPaaddr::port and Remote IPaddr:port are shown in Tools -> Manage Account -> Servers tab.

If your Nokl Client is on the same Local Network as Nokl Server, then use 'telnet LocalIPaddr LocalPort' to test direct connection.

If your Nokl Client is on different Network than Nokl Server, then use 'telnet RemoteIPaddr RemotePort' to test direct connection.

RemotePort is created on your Server's router using UPNP, so turn UPNP On in your router on Server side, using router manual.

Is there a way to mount remote drives on startup?

Sure, right click a remote drive in Dashboard, and check 'Keep Always Mounted'. Then choose to start NOKL on Windows/Mac startup in Program Options.

FREE? How are you offering this for free? What are the future plans for pricing and how do you use our data?

Nokl is free because we want a world where your data belongs to you, flows only where you choose, and can be easily shared without cloud storage.

As we grow, we expect core personal features (secure peer-to-peer access and direct file sharing) to stay free. We may introduce paid plans for advanced features and business use. But the foundation of private, direct ownership-based connectivity will remain free.
